This day at Teahupoo- Aug 27th 2011 during the Billabong Pro waiting period is what many are calling the biggest and gnarliest Teahupoo ever ridden. Chris Bryan was fortunate enough to be there working for Billabong on a day that will go down in the history of big wave surfing. The French Navy labeled this day a double code red prohibiting and threatening to arrest anyone that entered the water. Kelly Slater described the day by saying "witnessing this was a draining feeling being terrified for other people's lives all day long, it's life or death. Letting go of that rope one time can change your life and not many people will ever experience that in their life."

Update: I’ve gotten my paws on a second video off the Billabong site from the same swell (but of the 29th Aug?) …anyway, two different perspectives of an epic surf session that will go down in history for some time to come. Miraculously there were no deaths. And there was a woman (two gals?) surfing amongst the lads too. She suffered a bad wipe out and burst an ear drum but more comments and feedback from those were there on the Billabong site. Damn, you can just feel the energy out there, the adrenalin, whew, those folks, big guts + lots of know-how + supreme fitness + comradie + The Right Equipment = “I survived MASSIVE, UGLY, GNARLY Teahupoo!”
Well done! Here’s the second vid:
There is also a full write up of the whole session, the comp (winner was Kelly Slater) and a superb gallery of photos and other short videos on the VonZipper website. Epic stuff. And me: it’s three in the morning, I’m just sitting here like a toad on a Jo’burg mine dump, scoffing mah cheese & pro-vita biskies and slurping mah coffee and dreaming of big ocean blue. Whatever. Boo-hoo.
