Sir Ranulph Fiennes and the Trans-winter Antarctica expedition, 2013

Trekking across The Antarctica, it’s never been done before, 2000 miles in pitch-black winter, temperatures dropping to max. -80-90 degrees Celsius… Good Luck Fellows! Without sounding like a namedropper I met Ran around 1993 when he was in South Africa promoting his book Living Dangerously, I bought a signed copy and he delivered a slideshow of his first South Pole mission (with Dr Mike Shroud) and what a nice guy… he’s 68 years young now! Recognised as the World’s Greatest Living Explorer per the Guinness Book of Records. Search my blog for material on the Scott Expedition (there’s plenty of info and pics) and check out how they suffered one hundred years ago. You go lads! Go wish them luck on their website http://www.thecoldestjourney.org/ and follow their blog journal entries of the trip. SA Agulhas just sailed out of Cape Town the other day for Ross Island with Ran and his lads on board.

Ja, your local ranter has also done some weird stuff in his time regarding hell 'n gone places and seemingly inaccessible destinations (with my late pal Brian who blew his brains out two years ago) and some time when the mood hits I will shove some posts up about these adventures so stay tuned.

Ever lived on the rooftop of Southern Africa with nary a human in sight for two weeks? Slept in the snow before? Met AK47-wielding ANC foot soldiers (in 1983) up in the Lesotho mountains? Been chased from your mountain camp by Sotho scavengers and their hunting dogs in the middle of the night, in winter? Confronted a five-foot cobra in a river? Had frostbite? Nah? Ha-hah... go do it... then comment.

Unfortunately that book is gone now (along with everything else I possessed, in Finland, 2009) but Ran goes into details how he and Dr Mike Shroud HATED each other on that epic first journey... 6 months trekking together, sharing same tent, etc... well the good news is that they're BUDS again! But Mike couldn't make it again on this journey, probably for reasons of age. Sir Ran's a MACHINE!

(okay I'm bragging now) but go scale cliffs then disappear into the Lesotho mountain-tops for two weeks ON YOUR OWN then come chat...
